Selwyn - Room 23

Selwyn Satellite: Room 23

Kia ora to tatou whanau. E hiahia ana ahau ki te whakaatu i a au me aku kaiawhina kaiako. Ko Anna toku ingoa te kaiako o te akomanga me taku kaiawhina kaiako a Raewyn raua ko Kim. (Hello to our families. I would like to introduce myself and my teacher aides. My name is Anna the classroom teacher and my teacher aides Raewyn and Kim.)

We are a satellite class situated at Selwyn Primary School. Our akomanga (class) consists of three girls, four boys and three staff. Our students engage in a structured classroom programme, each bringing their own interests and skills into our learning environment. During whole class learning, students are encouraged to support their peers through sharing their knowledge. We have a robust mathematics and literacy programme to support and challenge all learners. Our focus this term is learning about our local area; geothermal activity, acknowledging street names in our area, and learning about our local maunga (mountain), that being Mount Ngongotaha. We recently walked the Ngongotaha nature loop track. This was a great learning experience for our ngā ākonga; (students) to appreciate animal and insect life on Mount Ngongotaha. Although we were unable to visit the geysers, I have footage of Waimangu thermal valley and shared this with our students. Photos and footage helped with relevant vocabulary to support them in making a poster!

This term we have been fortunate to attend MIGS (Mid Island Gymnastics Sports). We have a fantastic instructor Jo, who takes our students through necessary stretches and warm ups followed by engaging activities using a variety of apparatus. She encourages our students to challenge themselves within a safe environment.

Our Selwyn satellite team looks forward to a busy year of learning and new experiences!
